Summary

Alaska State Trooper Liam Campbell, demoted and reassigned to the remote Bush town of Newenham, literally steps off the plane into a murder scene。 Dealing with death is never simple, but when the woman leaning over the body proves to be Liam's old flame, it’s evident that his new job is about to become much more complicated。 From Newenham’s cast of eccentric—and sometimes hair-trigger—residents, to the intricate ballet of fishing boats rushing against time to net their limit, Stabenow captures the contagious spirit of melancholy madness that pervades America’s last frontier。

This series like Ms。 Stabenow’s Kate Shugak books is worth the time to read。 It gives great insight into life in Alaska。

Dion

Some good bits, some others that were just okay。 But the original voice is there。

Jim Dempsey

Another Stabenow tale Stabenow never fails to spin good yarns about the Alaskan bush life, the subsistence living, and the difference from life in the Lower 4! She always delivers。

Judy

Set in AlaskaVery different view of bush life and law。 It is nice to read a mystery with such a unique setting and characters。

The best part of Fire and Ice is the Alaskan setting。 Rugged individuals, lousy roads, too much alcohol, and too little of everything else make newly demoted and transferred state trooper Liam a very busy man。 Just off the plane to his new post, Liam is confronted with a possible murder - a grisly death by plane propeller。 A married man, Liam carries a lot of emotional baggage since his affair with a woman who now lives in the remote Alaskan village where he is posted。 She had broken up with Lia The best part of Fire and Ice is the Alaskan setting。 Rugged individuals, lousy roads, too much alcohol, and too little of everything else make newly demoted and transferred state trooper Liam a very busy man。 Just off the plane to his new post, Liam is confronted with a possible murder - a grisly death by plane propeller。 A married man, Liam carries a lot of emotional baggage since his affair with a woman who now lives in the remote Alaskan village where he is posted。 She had broken up with Liam but, sadly, his son was killed and his wife is comatose after a drunk driver struck their car。 Does he have a future with his former love? This is the first book in a series。 I am unsure if I will continue。 。。。more

I picked this up because I thought, given the blurb, that it would be a thriller-mystery thing。 It's not, it's actually romance and that's not my bag。 I did try to finish it, but as the murder is only an excuse to hang the romance on, I couldn't。It's a pity, as if the romance was dialled back a little and mystery brought forward, it would have been an engaging book for me and my tastes。 As romances go, I'm not qualified to judge as it's not my thing, so I leave that to those more versed in that I picked this up because I thought, given the blurb, that it would be a thriller-mystery thing。 It's not, it's actually romance and that's not my bag。 I did try to finish it, but as the murder is only an excuse to hang the romance on, I couldn't。It's a pity, as if the romance was dialled back a little and mystery brought forward, it would have been an engaging book for me and my tastes。 As romances go, I'm not qualified to judge as it's not my thing, so I leave that to those more versed in that genre than me。As for me though, the blurb and marketing need to be fixed to so it hits the core market that it's clearly aimed at。 I hate to think of the sales the author may be losing because it's being aimed at people like me, rather than romance readers。 People like me are like to give a bad review because it's not what we thought it was going to be and that's a shame。 。。。more

Probably first read this close to the time when it first came out in the late nineties。 The Kate Shugak series started before this one, and I know I've read all of those as they've been published。 Lots of interesting Alaskan details; the herring fishing event was especially compelling。 Listened to the audio this time, and Marguerite Gavin does a particularly good job; extra star for her narration。 Probably first read this close to the time when it first came out in the late nineties。 The Kate Shugak series started before this one, and I know I've read all of those as they've been published。 Lots of interesting Alaskan details; the herring fishing event was especially compelling。 Listened to the audio this time, and Marguerite Gavin does a particularly good job; extra star for her narration。 。。。more

3。5。 As is usual with the first book of a series a good part of this book was introducing the characters and providing some background。 Liam Campbell is assigned to be a trooper in a small Alaskan fishing village after his wife and son are killed by a drunk driver and he had a professional incident。 In the village he runs into the local pilot who happens to be his lost lover。 I enjoyed the description of the village and the people who live there- especially Bill and Moses。 Also enjoyed the descr 3。5。 As is usual with the first book of a series a good part of this book was introducing the characters and providing some background。 Liam Campbell is assigned to be a trooper in a small Alaskan fishing village after his wife and son are killed by a drunk driver and he had a professional incident。 In the village he runs into the local pilot who happens to be his lost lover。 I enjoyed the description of the village and the people who live there- especially Bill and Moses。 Also enjoyed the description of the herring fishing。 There are three murders Liam’s first few week of work and they were decent mysteries。 Looking forward to the next book。 。。。more

Fast-placed plot, complicated protagonist, interesting group of supporting characters - what’s not to like!

Dana Stabenow has finally brought back Liam Campbell, so I am re-reading this series before I dive into the new book。 Love this series, which is from a totally different angle than the equally wonderful Kate Shugak series。

Good mystery

Kath

Gave up after several chapters。 It was like reading the Keystone Cops。 Disappointed as it had an interesting story outline。

Sandy Carmichael

Enjoyed this mystery set in AK by one of my favorite authors

Unreadable。 Where is the text formatting in this book?

Notes:Too much drama loaded details are packed into one story。 I'll probably continue reading the series at some point but not eager to dive into it right away。 Notes:Too much drama loaded details are packed into one story。 I'll probably continue reading the series at some point but not eager to dive into it right away。 。。。more

Another Stabenow hero, Liam Campbell, Alaska State Trooper arrives to take his post in Newenham, and receives a grisly welcome。Again, beautiful descriptions of the landscape, and a good mystery with an unexpected ending, but IMHO, but the book overall was not up to the level of the Kate Shugak book that I read recently。 I found the Fire and Ice characters and the story line were stretching credibility a bit far, but it was still an OK read, good for a long bus ride or a plane trip (remember thos Another Stabenow hero, Liam Campbell, Alaska State Trooper arrives to take his post in Newenham, and receives a grisly welcome。Again, beautiful descriptions of the landscape, and a good mystery with an unexpected ending, but IMHO, but the book overall was not up to the level of the Kate Shugak book that I read recently。 I found the Fire and Ice characters and the story line were stretching credibility a bit far, but it was still an OK read, good for a long bus ride or a plane trip (remember those??) 。。。more

Read it years ago, but now re-reading the series in anticipation of a new book!! Much better and nuanced than I remembered! Yay, Dana Stabenow!

Melissa Herman

Excellent read!!

I’m a fan of Dana Stabenow’s writing and really enjoy two other of her series。 But Liam Campbell didn’t click with me, and neither did the mystery。 It didn’t help that I chose the audio version, as the narrator was terrible。 Why pick a female narrator when the lead protagonist and the majority of the other characters were male? I almost ditched the book, but。。。Dana Stabenow。 。

Julie Brooks

Awesome, as usual!Love Liam Campbell, terrific story and makes me want to go visit the mountains, people and towns of rural Alaska。

Anne Robinson

I enjoyed this book, as the first part of a series。 Whereas I found the first Kate Shugak book rather confusing, in this one the various characters were much more clearly written and the back story was easier to follow。 There is a terrific scene in the book which had me enthralled: the crowd of boats jostling around shoals of fish with their spotter planes manoeuvring above - this was excellent writing。 I am sure that I will continue to read the series。

I first read this one back in the 90s。 It was well worth the re-read。

Alice Tanner

Loved it! On to book 2

Jennifer

Decent story, good introduction to a character。 Not quite enough to make me want to keep reading, but almost。

I did not get enough of the Liam Campbell series!

This is a new series by one of my favorite authors。 Yay! During one of the Kate Shugak books Kate meets trooper Liam Campbell in the backside of nowhere。 Now Trooper Campbell has his own series and I like it almost as much as Kate's! Great Setting, Average Mystery with Underdeveloped CharactersDana Stabenow is a great writer; however, this is not her best effort。 She still can describe great settings in Alaska。 The mysteries were well-connected and believable。 The main drawback ofthis novel is that the protagonist is not likeable。 He is flawed and unsure。 What he has gone through would destroy most people。 That makes the protagonist not only unlikable, but not relatable to most readers。

Interesting characters and plot。 The author’s books always teach me something new with detail and without being tedious。 I think I’ll give the second book in this series a chance。
